Csabai Renátó exhibition. Opening: 2021.06.17.18.h.
This is the third exhibition of Renátó Csabai, who graduated from the University of Fine Arts in 2008, at the MissionArt Gallery. The 39-year-old artist has been painting and drawing pictures based on photos almost since the beginning, one of the reasons for this is that he grew up in a family of photographers, photography was a constant medium around him since childhood. His early pictures are mainly transcriptions of photos from the family archive, which were able to create a balance in which the nostalgic and retro atmosphere that they evoke was well counterbalanced by a cooler, more distant, objective stance. From the beginning, the view of the world focused on the human figure, later mainly on the human face, and within that mainly on the female face. For a long time, he painted on organza, a special material not used by painters at all, using only black. The tulle-like, transparent carrier made it possible „… to display the dream-like atmosphere that I was trying to create, so that my portraits are more soulful than simple human depictions.” – he writes about his previous works. A few years ago, he created an independent series of A/4 sheets of fictional, imagined female faces and heads, each of which radiated a specific subcultural character and a special inner world. His current exhibition is the continuation of a series he started earlier, in which the faces of world stars, famous scientists, and artists appear, when he scratched photo portraits downloaded from the Internet with digital tools. The rough intervention on the pages of this series is not objectionable, because it did not destroy, but resulted in a strange hiddenness, a playfully magical effect, which rather evoked the scribbled figures in school textbooks (probably out of student revenge). Three years ago, we presented these sheets at a joint exhibition with Ágnes Verebics. The pictures now exhibited continue this previous series in such a way that the downloaded and converted photos are not digitally printed, but painted on canvas and foil, i.e. hand-worked, they take on a visible shape and gain an independent form.
A 2008-ban a Képzőművészeti Egyetemen végzett Csabai Renátó harmadik kiállítása ez már a MissionArt Galériában. A 39 éves művész szinte a kezdetektől fotó alapú képeket fest és rajzol, ennek egyik eredője, hogy fotós családban nőtt fel, a fotó egy állandó közeg volt körülötte gyermekkora óta. Korai képei főleg a családi archívumból származó fotók átiratai, amelyek képesek voltak egy olyan egyensúly megteremtésére, amelyben a bennük felesejlő nosztalgikus és retro hangulatot jó ellenpontozta egy hűvösebb, távolságtartóbb, objektív alapállás. A világra való rátekintés kezdettől az emberi alakra, később főleg az emberi arcra, azon belül is főleg a női arcra koncentrált. Hosszú ideig egy sajátos, festők által egyáltalán nem használt anyagra, organzára festett, csak feketével. A tül szerű, átlátszó hordozó tette lehetővé „…annak az álomszerű atmoszférának a megjelenítését, aminek létrehozására törekedtem, hogy ez által a portréim inkább lélek-, mint szimpla emberábrázolások legyenek.” – írja korábbi műveiről. Néhány éve egy A/4-es lapokból álló önnálló sorozatot készített kitalált, elképzelt női arcokról, fejekről, melyek mindegyike egy-egy sajátos szubkulturális karaktert, különleges belső világot sugárzozott. Mostani kiállítása egy korábban elkezdett sorozat folytatása, amelyben világsztárok, híres tudósok, művészek arcai tűnnek fel, amikor is a világhálóról letöltött fotóportrékat digitális eszközökkel összekarcolta. E sorozat lapjain a durvának ható beavatkozás mégsem ellenszenves, mert nem roncsolt, hanem egy furcsa elrejtettséget, játékosan mágikus hatást eredményezett, ami inkább az iskolai tankönyvek (valószínűleg diákos bosszúból) összefirkárt alakjait idézte. Három évvel ezelőtt Verebics Ágnessel közös kiállításon mutattuk be e lapokat. A most kiállított képek e korábbi sorozatot úgy folytatják, hogy a letöltött és átalakított fotók nem digitális printben, hanem vászonra és fóliára festve, tehát kézzel megmunkálva kapnak látható alakot, nyernek önálló formát.
